Description

This beautiful fruit bush is also known as Miltomato Valista or the Chichiquelite Huckleberry.

4 foot tall plants that bush out like trees and provide hundreds of sweet purple black berries. We grew these out as a trial in the greenhouse and one plant was all we needed. I cut back the leaves after harvesting the berries 3 times. As of November 1 it has been cut back and harvested from again.

The berries are considered a huckleberry and as such you have to absolutely wait until the entire berry cluster turns black to eat them. They will turn from a shiny black to a dull black.

As with all huckleberries you CANNOT eat the green berries as they may be poisonous.

The RAW berries taste like a purple grape with a Hint of sweet tomato and blackberries. It tastes amazing and takes you by surprise how much you will like them.

We have made Jams and jellies from them as they are super sweet and not your typical huckleberry. Loves full sun and 85 degree heat, loves to be watered but not soaked and needs very little attention. My research has found out it Originally came from Africa to Mexico where apparently it’s been growing for the last 400 years there.

Its very prolific and hardy but not frost tolerant. Does well also in containers.

It tastes like a blueberry when it is put in preserves or used as a sauce.

This has turned out to be one of my favourite berry bushes that we will definitely be replanting next year.

Start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost and plant out when warm. Slow to germinate but once they germinate they grow very fast.
